Who Is Joy Boy in One Piece? The Truth About the First Pirate Who Will Define the Ending

Joy Boy stopped being a loose legend a long time ago. Today, he’s the piece that ties together Luffy, Roger, the Void Century, and the real meaning of One Piece itself. When Zunesha dropped that “Joy Boy has returned” line at Onigashima, it wasn’t just a dramatic beat — it was confirmation that Luffy is carrying a will that’s been building for 800 years, and that completely changes how we should be reading where the story’s headed.

This article pulls together everything already confirmed about Joy Boy, the promise he never got to keep, the real relationship between him and Nika, and the most heavily debated theories about how all of this is likely to tie into the story’s ending.

Who Joy Boy Actually Was

Joy Boy was the first pirate in history, born roughly 900 years ago, tied to what’s known as the Great Kingdom. He was the original user of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika — the exact same Fruit Luffy eats as a kid, with no idea what he was swallowing. He led the Great Kingdom during the Great War against the Twenty Kingdoms that would eventually go on to form the World Government. And before he fell, he left behind a treasure on Laugh Tale and a network of Poneglyphs scattered across the entire world.

Three lines sum up the weight of this character inside the story pretty well. Vegapunk, in chapter 1114, explains that Joy Boy was the first pirate, from the Great Kingdom, and that he fought carrying the traits of the Sun God Nika, with a body capable of stretching and contracting. Zunesha, in 1044, recognizes the sound and declares that Joy Boy has returned. And Roger, in chapter 967, drops the line that sent the entire community into a frenzy: he wishes he’d been born in the same era as Joy Boy — because he and his crew had arrived too early.

The Broken Promise to Fish-Man Island

Here’s one of the most emotionally loaded points in all of Joy Boy’s story. He struck a deal with the Poseidon of the time — the Mermaid Princess of that era — with one specific plan: build the ark Noah using her power over the Sea Kings, and finally take the Fish-Man people to the surface.

For reasons the story still hasn’t fully laid out, Joy Boy failed. And instead of just vanishing, he left behind a formal apology to the Mermaid Princess written on a Poneglyph hidden in the Sea Forest, admitting he couldn’t hold up his end of the deal — along with a promise that someone, someday, would finish what he started. Noah would be preserved until that “appointed time” arrived.

And judging by where every piece sits right now, that moment doesn’t look far off. Luffy already saved Noah once, when the Sea Kings stopped the ark’s fall during the Fish-Man Island arc. Shirahoshi, the current Poseidon, has the exact same ability to summon Sea Kings that her predecessor did. Every piece needed to fulfill that 800-year-old promise is now sitting on the same board.

Joy Boy and Nika: One Person, or Two Different Legends?

This mix-up is really common, so it’s worth drawing a clear line between the two:

NikaJoy Boy
A mythological figure (the Sun God)A real, flesh-and-blood person
A legend worshipped by slaves, including in ElbafThe first pirate in history, from the Great Kingdom
Known as the “Warrior of Liberation”Fought carrying Nika’s traits
Existed as a legend even before Joy BoyLived roughly 900 years ago

The bridge between the two is the Fruit itself. The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika grants whoever awakens it the traits of the Sun God — and Joy Boy was its original user. Luffy is the current user, having eaten what everyone knew as the Gomu Gomu no Mi, but which was always, in reality, Nika’s Fruit in disguise, thanks to a decision made by the World Government itself.

In other words: Nika works almost like a title, not an individual identity. Whoever awakens this Fruit, in a sense, “becomes” Nika. Joy Boy went through that 800 years ago. Luffy goes through the same process when he activates Gear 5 at Onigashima. And that’s exactly what explains the World Government’s terror of this specific Fruit: in One Piece’s popular culture, Nika is a direct symbol of freeing slaves and ending oppression.

“We Got Here Too Early”: The Message Roger Found on Laugh Tale

When Roger’s crew finally reaches Laugh Tale, they find the message Joy Boy left behind, the true history of the Void Century, and the plan he’d drawn up to free the world. Roger’s reaction — laughing out loud and declaring they’d arrived too early — carries a very specific logic.

Roger didn’t have the Nika Fruit. Without it, there was no way to “become” Joy Boy and see that plan through to the end. The message, by all appearances, pointed to a future return — someone who’d come carrying exactly that Fruit. That’s why Oden, after seeing what he saw, went back to Wano determined to open the country’s borders to welcome Joy Boy when he arrived. And it’s also why Toki used her own Toki Toki no Mi to send Momonosuke and the Scabbards exactly 20 years into the future.

Twenty years later, Luffy arrives in Wano, defeats Kaido in Gear 5, and Zunesha announces Joy Boy’s return. Toki’s prophecy hit dead on.

Is Luffy Joy Boy? What the Story Has Already Confirmed

The exact turning point comes in chapter 1044: Luffy collapses, seemingly defeated by Kaido, and his heart actually stops. When it starts beating again, it beats to the rhythm of what’s known as the Drums of Liberation — and that’s the sound Zunesha hears from far away before declaring that Joy Boy has returned.

The list of indirect confirmations has been growing ever since:

WhoWhat they saidChapter
Zunesha“Joy Boy has returned”1044
Momonosuke (via Zunesha)The Drums of Liberation sounded1044
KaidoRecognizes Luffy as Joy Boy upon being defeated1049
EmetCalls Luffy Joy Boy directly1119–1120
ImuAlso refers to Luffy as Joy Boy1122, 1187

One important clarification, though: Luffy isn’t a reincarnation of Joy Boy — there’s no sign that the first pirate’s soul is living inside him. What the story actually backs up is something else: Luffy is a successor. He carries the same Fruit, and more importantly, the same will. “Joy Boy” works as a title handed to whoever has a genuine desire to free the world — the first was a man from the Great Kingdom; the second is Luffy.

5 Planted Details Almost Nobody Caught Right Away

1. Joy Boy sealed Haki inside Emet. Before he died, Joy Boy found the war giant Emet and literally tied his own Conqueror’s Haki inside him. Eight centuries later, that Haki was released on Egghead — knocking out Marines and protecting Luffy at a critical moment. In other words: Joy Boy left behind a safeguard waiting for his successor to show up.

2. Kuma almost filled this role. Kuma, a Buccaneer, deeply believed in Nika, passed that faith down to Bonney, and even directly saved Luffy on more than one occasion. He had the will to liberate — he just didn’t have the Fruit. It’s a cruel, deliberate parallel.

3. Toki’s 20-year prophecy. It wasn’t a random number: Toki sent Momonosuke exactly two decades into the future, and Luffy landed in Wano right on that deadline.

4. Shyarly’s prediction. The fortune teller from Fish-Man Island predicted that a straw-hat-wearing man would destroy the island. Luffy ended up saving the place — but Noah got damaged and preserved in the process, which feeds the reading that the prediction was pointing to a different moment, still to come.

5. Rocks D. Xebec already brought up Joy Boy. In chapter 1080, Xebec asks whether the people he’s talking to fear Davy Jones or Joy Boy more — proving the name was never completely erased from pirate memory, despite the World Government’s best efforts to bury the Void Century.

Three Theories the Community Can’t Stop Debating

Heads up: the readings below are fan theory, not confirmed by the story.

Theory 1 — The One Piece is Joy Boy’s plan, not a treasure. The basis: Roger laughed when he read the message, Oden prepared Wano to receive Joy Boy, and everything points to something that isn’t gold. The hypothesis is that the ultimate treasure is, in practice, the plan to liberate the world itself — and that Imu fears the One Piece so much precisely because he knows it’s capable of bringing down the entire World Government.

Theory 2 — Joy Boy was a Buccaneer. Kuma is a Buccaneer, believed in Nika, and the Government hunted that race nearly to extinction right after the Great War. The reading suggests the Buccaneers were Joy Boy’s allies in the original conflict — and that Kuma, in that sense, represents a “Joy Boy who never got to be.”

Theory 3 — Imu will fall to Joy Boy’s Haki. Imu recognizes Luffy’s Haki as being the same as Joy Boy’s, and that Haki has already shown it can directly interfere with the Five Elders’ powers on Egghead. The hypothesis is that the final confrontation gets settled exactly there: Joy Boy’s will canceling out whatever sustains Imu’s power.

Where All of This Is Pointing: The Real Ending of One Piece

The Straw Hats already have three Road Poneglyphs (Zou, Whole Cake, and Wano) and need the fourth — possibly tied to Elbaf, or in Shanks’ possession. Once all four are combined, Laugh Tale finally reveals itself, and Luffy should read the same message that made Roger laugh 25 years ago.

If the readings above hold up, the One Piece isn’t gold. It’s will. It’s a plan. It’s a legacy — something Joy Boy couldn’t finish and that Luffy was, in some way, chosen to complete. It even fits with the very nature of Nika: a figure associated not with conquest, but with joy and liberation.

What the ending seems to be building toward is a Pirate King who doesn’t earn that title by conquering the seas — but by freeing the people who were trapped in them.
